Brian C. Hoeck put the following together to show the difference between wheat and barley. This is great and can be used for reference. It confirms the earlier concerns.

Distinguishing Wheat and Barley
Hi James!
I just signed on and read your email. I clicked the link to Bethel’s report and was quite surprised by the photos. Solomon Meyer took pictures of wheat(!), not barley. I’ve attached a picture of wheat side by side with barley in my hand from the Abib search 2008 (barley is on the left, wheat on the right). Note how the wheat looks.
Now look at Solomon’s pictures.
Secondly, “abib” does not mean “GREEN ears.” Abib barley is generally yellowed.
The barley in the pic below is green, but it not abib:
See how the hulls are not filled. It cannot be made into flour for an offering. Below is a pic of abib barley:
Abib (or, more properly transliterated, `aviv), as defined by Scripture, is reference to barley that:
- is no longer dark in color
- is brittle enough to be destroyed by hail
- is mature enough to be dried in fire without shriveling up and leaving empty shells (i.e., mature enough to make into flour).
in Messiah,
Brian
