Paleo Times September 2000 Newsletter

Greetings Brethren,

The seventh Biblical month is almost here with the next visible new moon. This is a time to be joyous and repentant. The mercy and love of Yahweh has given us many blessings. The seventh month starts with the sighting of the new moon. The Feast of Trumpets starts as soon as the new moon is seen. The tenth day of the month is the Day of Atonement. The ten days from the beginning of the month until the Day of Atonement are solemn in preparation of the fast and affliction. The fifteenth day is the beginning of a very joyous time called the Feast of Tabernacles. The day after the seven days of Tabernacles or the 22nd day of the seventh month is called the Last Great Day.

Many have asked which days are we not to work during the seventh month. There are four days during this time that we are not to do any work. (Please note that these specific days are in conjunction with the visible new moon.) September 28th at sunset, the visible new moon and the Feast of Trumpets, through the end of the weekly Sabbath September 30th at sunset. This means that we will have to prepare by getting what we need for the two days ready ahead of time. Having a full tank of gas is important if we will be traveling a long ways for the convocation.

The next high day is the Day of Atonement. This year Atonement falls on a Sunday. That means that will have to prepare for the Sabbath and the Day of Atonement in advance. October 6th at sunset through October 8th at sunset is a continuous Sabbath starting with the weekly Sabbath and ending with a Day of Atonement.

The Feast of Tabernacles starts with a High Day on October 12th at sunset and is followed by a weekly Sabbath. This means that Thursday the 12th all Feast of Tabernacles preparations must be finished, at least the preparations that can't wait until after the Sabbath. The Last Great Day is kept on October 19th at sunset and concludes with sunset on October 20th. October 20th at sunset starts the weekly Sabbath which ends at sunset on October 21st. Yahweh has given us a blessing in the seventh month feasts.

It maybe complicated when we are new to the faith to understand how the feasts are to be kept but with practice and study we all will have a more obedient and joyous time. Each of these feasts we are to appear before Yahweh with some of our blessings. Yahweh says that we are not to appear before Him empty. (Exodus 23:15) Yahweh's blessings through Yahshua the Messiah are endless. Any offerings that you are led by the Holy Spirit to donate to this ministry will be used to teach and send literature around the world. We do appreciate so much the generosity and kindness of Yahweh and Yahshua.

We would like to thank brethren for the prayers and donations to Antonio for a Shofar to be used by the Brazilian Assembly of Yahweh. We have reached enough funds for this project to send a Shofar to this Brother. Please pray for Yahweh's Assembly in Brazil.

I pray that all the Brethren and Sisters have a safe trip to keep the feasts of the seventh month for those that are traveling. I pray you have a joyous and exciting time. I pray that these feasts add to your understanding.

Agape in Messiah,

James Meyer

Assembly Edification

The following compositions are articles and short stories submitted by brethren and sisters to edify the Assembly. If you have written a composition that you would like it included please submit it through email or postal mail.

Life Pains

Have you ever heard the saying, "I never promised you a rose garden." or " Life is no bowl of cherries?" There are numerous adages that address the fact life is not easy. However there seems to be a lure for the fast and easy way. Instant gratification is the motto of the twenty first century. Take a close look around you. Infomercials that sell get rich schemes and make life easy gadgets, cosmetics and plastic surgery that promise instant beauty, and self help books that advertise happiness in 30 days. Funny, because it is the opposite of what we know to be true. That life is no stroll in the park.

I looked up the word strength in The Thompson Exhaustive topical Bible. Here are a few passages that I found.

Psalms 28:8 Yahweh is their strength, and he is the saving strength of His anointed. Elohim is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Isaiah 26:4 Trust ye in Yahweh for ever: for in Yahweh is everlasting strength.

1Corinthians 12:9-10 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Messiah may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for messiah's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Yahweh has blessed us with physical abilities so we may manipulate and understand our environment. In His great wisdom Yah has given us talents and gifts so we may serve the body in the Messiah. But with all this we still need Yahweh's strength.

When daily living has taken its toll and the strength to move just isn't there I humble myself and ask Yahweh to give me strength because I can't do with out Him. I don't need an easier life I need Yahweh and the saving blood of Yahshua.

"DID YOU KNOW?" TEN PROPHETIC SIGNS:

THE KNOWLEDGE EXPLOSION

The road sign confirming that we are a terminal generation is recorded by Daniel; "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase" Dan. 12:4. The literal translation of this scripture indicates that the end time generation will experience a knowledge explosion. We are definitely that generation. From the Garden of Eden until 1900 CE, men walked or rode horses just as King David and Julius Caesar. In the span of a few years, mankind invented the automobile, the jet plane, and the space shuttle. Medically we have experienced such a knowledge explosion that medical science had to redefine death. Man can be kept alive indefinitely by machines and miracle drugs. The knowledge explosion is evidenced by the information superhighway. You can sit in the quiet of your own home and drown yourself in information and knowledge from the Internet.

THE REBIRTH OF ISRAEL

Every major prophet in the Old Testament testified that Yahweh would bring the Jewish people out of their Gentile graves [Nations] and bring them back to Israel before the coming of Yahshua. Do you remember what happened May 15, 1948? "The United Nations has announced today that they have formally recognized the state of Israel." The rebirth of Israel is not a historical accident. It is the hand of Yahweh controlling the affairs of men just as the prophets of Israel said He would.

THE JEWS WILL RETURN HOME

Jeremiah declared, "Therefore, behold, the days are coming says Yahweh, that they shall no longer say, 'As Yahweh lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,' but, 'As Yahweh lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them. And they shall dwell in their own land.' Jer. 23:7-8. The Jews from the north country [Russia] have returned to Israel by the tens of thousands as have Jewish people from around the world. We have seen them on television newscasts disembarking from planes in Tel Aviv. We have read it in every form of print media. But we read it first in Jeremiah. It is another sign that we are in the last days.

JERUSALEM NO LONGER UNDER GENTILE RULE

Bible prophecy states that Jerusalem will not be under Gentile rule in the last generation. The Jewish people did not control the Holy City from 70 AD when the Romans attacked the city and destroyed the temple until the Six-Day War of 1967. Yahshua said that Jerusalem would be "trampled by Gentiles until the time of the Gentiles are fulfilled Luke 21:24. King David said, "For Yahweh shall build up. Zion [Jerusalem]; He shall appear in His glory" Psalms 102:16. Jerusalem is under the control of the Jewish people for the first time in two thousand years.

INTERNATIONAL INSTANT COMMUNICATION

In Revelation 11:3, 7-10, John describes two witnesses [perhaps two nations, Jewish-modern day Israel] who will be executed and their dead bodies would be seen three-and-a-half days lying in the streets of Jerusalem by peoples from around the world, people of different nations and languages. For generations Bible scholars questioned how these two witnesses could be seen at the same time by all the earth. Then came television, followed by international satellites. This was not possible in 1900! This was not possible in 1960! It is possible today.

DAYS OF DECEPTION

Yahshua warned, "Take heed that no one deceive you. For many will come in My name...and will deceive many ... For false messiah and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect". Matt: 24:4, 5, 24. Yahshua warned that the number one problem on the earth in the last days would be deception. Secular humanism is deception. New Age theories and philosophies are deception. Environmental gurus who teach that the earth is but the breast of "mother goodness" are doling out deception. Satanism and the occult are deception. The apostate church, which has a form of godliness but denies the power of the name of Yahweh, is practicing deception which abounds.

FAMINES AND PESTILENCE

America has the ability to feed the world, yet we pay farmers not to grow certain crops lest they glut the market and drive prices down. On a regular basis on the national news we see starving children with bloated bellies, bulging eyes, and bare ribs. Why ? Yahshua said that in the last days "there would be famines, pestilence's, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matt. 24:7, 8)

PLAGUE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

The prophet Zechariah had a vision and didn't know how to describe what he saw so he called the gruesome results a plague. This plague was sent to all who came to fight against Jerusalem in the last days. The plague would consume a man's flesh while he was yet standing. His eyes would dissolve in their sockets and his tongue would dissolve in his mouth. (Zech. 14:12-15) Zechariah's plague has been a mystery for many years. And then the atomic bomb was invented. An atomic bomb can produce a temperature of 150 million degrees Fahrenheit in one millionth of a second. Is this how a man's tongue and eyes can be consumed before his corpse hits the ground? Zechariah's plague is no longer a mystery. It's atomic warfare, and it has been used on Japan, and will be used again with more destructive power.

EARTHQUAKES

Yahweh uses earthquakes to communicate with the spiritually deaf. The Bible records at least thirty-three instances where Yahweh used an earthquake to get man's attention. The earth quaked at Mount Sinai when Moses received the Ten Commandments Ex.19:18; Yahweh used an earthquake in Jerusalem at the implement and death of Yahshua the Messiah, this earthquake split the veil of the temple from the top to the bottom-Matt. 27:51. He used an earthquake at the Resurrection to roll the stone from the borrowed tomb--not to let Yahshua out but to let us in. (Matt. 28:2) The constant trembling of the earth is Yahweh's voice speaking through nature.

AS IN THE DAYS OF NOAH

Yahshua said in Matthew. "But of that day and hour no one knows, no, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son Man be," Matt. 24:36,37. What characteristic mark the days of Noah? Genesis tells us that man's wickedness on the earth was very great and that, "every intent of the thought of his heart was only evil continually," Gen. 6:5. If you read and listen to the daily news, you will loose your appetite just hearing of the murders, rapes, kidnapping, assaults, child abuse, spouse abuse, government corruption, drug addiction, pornography, homosexuality, adultery, and fornication and more. This generation is as Noah generation with the thoughts of its heart continuously evil.

Day of Covering

Yahweh commands that in the seventh month of the Biblical year that we are to afflict our souls. What does affliction of our soul mean and what is the meaning of Atonement to a messianic believer? With this study we hope to bring the modern worshipper into harmony with the scriptures by showing that Atonement is an important part of our continuing walk in truth. Let's start with the command by Yahweh that we are to keep the Day of Covering (Yom Kaphar or Yom Kippur).

Atonement Commanded

In Leviticus chapter 23 and verse 27 lets look at what Yahweh said to Moses.

Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh. (Leviticus 23:27 AV)

Yahweh in verse 27 states that the Day of Atonement is to be a set apart day and a day of convocation. This means that on Atonement we are not to do our daily labors and that we are to come together as a group. Yahweh then says that we are to afflict our souls and make an offering of fire. The offering of fire is no longer in affect. Yahshua was the sacrifice above and beyond the atonement sacrifice of the life of an animal. (Hebrews 10:4-11) Yahshua is the High Priest of the Melchizedek priesthood and with Yahshua's sacrifice we no longer sacrifice animals. (Hebrews 6:20) This still leaves open the first part of the command to convocate and to afflict our souls. We will explain further what this affliction is later in this article but lets continue in Leviticus 23.

And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before Yahweh your Elohim. (Leviticus 23:28 AV)

Yahweh says here in verse 28 that we are not to do any work on the Day of Atonement. Atonement is defined in Strong's Exhaustive Concordance as to cover, purge, make an atonement, make reconciliation, and cover over with pitch. Atonement is a day where we afflict our souls to show Yahweh that we are truly sorry for any sin that we have committed. It means much more now to those who know that Yahshua was Yahweh's Messiah. In Hebrews 10:4 we find that animals cannot take away our sin. Yahshua has taken away our sins if we repent and change. This is the heart that Yahweh has always wanted and Atonement brings us closer to this. (Deut. 5:29)

For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath. (Leviticus 23:29-32 AV)

We find that Yahweh clarifies what is to happen to those who do work on the Day of Atonement, Yahweh will destroy them. Those that do not afflict their souls will be cut off from Yahweh's people. Atonement is to be observed forever. In verse 32 we find that Yahweh clarifies that the Day of Atonement is to be kept from sunset on the ninth to sunset on tenth. The affliction of our souls is to be done if we intend on being a part of Israel.

Affliction of Our Soul

"Affliction of our soul," is defined in two parts. Affliction is defined as to afflict, oppress, humble, be afflicted, and be bowed down by Strong's Concordance. Soul is defined as a person. So to afflict our soul is humble oneself and go with out so that we are weakened. Lets go one step farther by saying that afflict means to fast. If you look at Bullinger's notes for Leviticus 16:29 it points us to Isaiah 58:3, 5, 10 for the reason that affliction means fast here and elsewhere.

Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. (Isaiah 58:3 AV)

Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh? (Isaiah 58:5 AV)

And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: (Isaiah 58:10 AV)

Isaiah in these verses is indicating that by fasting we are being afflicted. In Psalms 35:13 we find that fasting and affliction as well as prayer go together which explicitly points to humility. This is one of the reasons that most Jewish sources speak of prayer all day during Atonement. We also find in the following scriptures that affliction is defined as fasting.

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our Elohim, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. (Ezra 8:21 AV)

But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled (afflict) my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. (Psalms 35:13 AV)

Affliction defined by scripture is fasting and making oneself humble. The ten days from Trumpets until Atonement are considered a time of cleansing and preparation for the fast of Atonement. Atonement is a holy day in the Messianic Era where we are to have approached with repentance asking for forgiveness.

Messianic Era

Many people who believe in a Savior believe that he abolished the law making sin of no concern. We know that Yahweh's law is still to be kept. If we could perfectly follow Yahshua's path we would have no sin to atone for but we know that we are not perfect. We have been given an advantage over all those who didn't know Yahshua. Yahshua gave himself as a perfect sacrifice giving us a forgiveness that animals could not. Atonement is still a very important part of forgiveness and mercy. We still sin and still have to repent and change. You are given an excellent chance at eternal life but unless we have kept Yahweh's law and atoned for our sins we are not Yahweh's people.

Paul said, "Who is Israel?" He answered saying, "Israel is the people that follow Yahweh." (Romans 9:4) Atonement is commanded and we know that Yahshua kept Atonement otherwise he would not of been a perfect and innocent sacrifice. So we too must continue in his footsteps.

Yahshua taught atonement through his words and actions. One way to look at this issue is to start by defining repentance. Repentance is the changing of one's ways by making restitution and never setting down that path again. Yahshua said that he came to teach repentance to sinners. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. (Matthew 9:13 AV) Consider that this was a teaching that the Biblical educators of Yahshua's time didn't quite understand. Yahshua achieved a change in the believer's heart which goes beyond boundaries of a sin punishment relationship. Our Creator has always wanted His people to follow with heart and not just fear. This is one of the beauties of Yahshua's ministry that he as Yahweh loves all those that follow Yahweh's commandments and has love for the brethren. We see that they both go hand in hand. Repentance is a vital part of Yahshua's ministry. Remember that John baptized Yahshua for the repentance of sins. (Luke 3:3 AV) Yahshua was not guilty of sin but he showed us the path that we are to take. John spoke of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire. The path is the baptism in Yahshua's name for the repentance of sin and the laying on of hands to ask for the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

Repentance as Yahshua taught brings us to atone for our sin with an understanding of our wrong and restitution for our sin. The Day of Atonement is a Sabbath of awesome holiness. We step back from our life of serving oneself with food and drink giving up what keeps our physical life going. We know that if we continued to stop drinking we would die but it is not the food or water that sustains us. Think of what Yahshua after fasting for forty days said to Satan when he told him to turn the stones to bread for food.

But he (Yahshua) answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of Yahweh. (Matthew 4:4 AV)

The Jubilee year Atonement is when all things are restored. (Leviticus 25:9-15) This leads many to believe that Yahshua will return on the Day of Atonement. Another sign that Yahshua will return on Atonement is the blowing of the Shofar in the Jubilee year. This happens once every 50 years. We must keep watchful. (1 Corinthians 15:52)

Then shalt thou cause the loud sound of the trumpet to go forth in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month; on the day of atonement shall ye cause the trumpet (Shofar) to go forth throughout your land. (Leviticus 25:9 DBY)

Readings

There are many readings that are great for bringing out the meaning of Atonement. The book of Jonah is usually read because of the suffering and repentance that people of Nineveh endured when they were shown their wickedness. Jonah was afraid of the violence of Nineveh but he may have also looked down on the people of Nineveh. Nineveh was a city that was comprised of mostly gentiles. Jonah also was a very successful prophet in that the people of Nineveh turned from evil. This wasn't pleasing to Jonah because he felt that it was a failure because what he prophesized didn't come true. Yahweh demonstrated through a gourd that he should be happy for Nineveh because they changed through Jonah's teaching to them. The gourd was insignificant compared with the great number of people that were saved from certain destruction.

Leviticus 16 is read because it goes through the special ceremony that is to be done on Atonement. In verse 10 a scapegoat was drawn through lots. The scapegoat was to bear the sins of the people. (verses 21 and 22) The goat was sent into the wilderness. During the second temple period the scapegoat was thrown from a cliff to its death. Leviticus 23:23-32 is read because it is the command to keep Atonement. Isaiah 57:14-58:14 are read because they deal with fasting. Micah 7:18-20 is also read because Micah deals with forgiveness and mercy. Matthew 5:2-16 is read because with the repentance of Atonement we should be mindful of what we should be like and represent. These scriptures in Matthew 5 are called the "be" attitudes which are the approach that we should have towards life.

Summary

As brethren in Messiah we are commanded to keep the Day of Atonement with fasting. Work is strictly prohibited and those that do not keep the Day of Atonement are to be removed from the congregation. We don't sacrifice animals but we offer the sacrifice of praise to the Almighty Yahweh.

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to Yahweh continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. (Hebrews 13:15 AV)

We must humble ourselves because we are not perfect. Our goal should be to live our lives as disciples of Yahshua the Messiah. Yahshua's teachings of love and repentance help us learn to set our hearts in the right place. Yahshua has given us so much. Yahshua has given us a clean start when we come out of the waters of baptism. Lets prove that we have repented and that we are ready for a life of dedication to Yahweh. Dedication without any guarantee maybe hard to justify but the reward of such a dedication is in the fruit. (Galatians 5:22-23) We should look at the reward as being a light that if we shine in the world those who are called will find the truth. The Holy Spirit is given to Yahweh's people and in a world that is so corrupt it glows as Moses did when he came down from Mt. Sinai with the law of Yahweh. Atonement is a humbling experience commanded by Yahweh. May Yahweh's word feed you and nourish you. HalleluYah!

Scriptures to Read on the Day of Atonement

The following are the scriptures mentioned in this article. They are just some of the scriptures that should be during the Day of Atonement.

Jonah

1:1 Now the word of Yahweh came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. 3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. 4 But Yahweh sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his deity; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. 6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy Elohim, if so be that Elohim will think upon us, that we perish not. 7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. 8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? 9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Yahweh, the Elohim of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land. 10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them. 11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. 13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14 Wherefore they cried unto Yahweh, and said, We beseech thee, O Yahweh, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou, O Yahweh, hast done as it pleased thee. 15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto Yahweh, and made vows. 17 And Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. 2:1 Then Jonah prayed unto Yahweh his Elohim out of the fish's belly. 2 And he said, I called by reason of mine affliction unto Yahweh, And he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I, And thou heardest my voice. 3 For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me; All thy waves and thy billows passed over me. 4 And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes; Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. 5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; The deep was round about me; The weeds were wrapped about my head. 6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed upon me for ever: Yet hast thou brought up my life from the pit, O Yahweh my Elohim. 7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh; And my prayer came in unto thee, into thy holy temple. 8 They that regard lying vanities Forsake their own mercy. 9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is of Yahweh. 10 And Yahweh spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. 3:1 And the word of Yahweh came unto Jonah the second time, saying, 2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. 3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city, of three days' journey. 4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. 5 And the people of Nineveh believed Elohim; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 6 And the tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he made proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water; 8 but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and beast, and let them cry mightily unto Elohim: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who knoweth whether Elohim will not turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? 10 And Elohim saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and Elohim repented of the evil which he said he would do unto them; and he did it not. 4:1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2 And he prayed unto Yahweh, and said, I pray thee, O Yahweh, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hasted to flee unto Tarshish; for I knew that thou art a gracious Elohim, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, and repentest thee of the evil. 3 Therefore now, O Yahweh, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. 4 And Yahweh said, Doest thou well to be angry? 5 Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city. 6 And Yahweh Elohim prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his evil case. So Jonah was exceeding glad because of the gourd. 7 But Elohim prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that it withered. 8 And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that Elohim prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. 9 And Elohim said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. 10 And Yahweh said, Thou hast had regard for the gourd, for which thou hast not labored, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: 11 and should not I have regard for Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

Leviticus 16

16:1 And Yahweh spake unto Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before Yahweh, and died; 2 and Yahweh said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the mercy-seat which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy-seat. 3 Herewith shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering. 4 He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with the linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: they are the holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on. 5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two he-goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering. 6 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself, and for his house. 7 And he shall take the two goats, and set them before Yahweh at the door of the tent of meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for Yahweh, and the other lot for Azazel. 9 And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for Yahweh, and offer him for a sin-offering. 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before Yahweh, to make atonement for him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness. 11 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself: 12 and he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before Yahweh, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil: 13 and he shall put the incense upon the fire before Yahweh, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy-seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not: 14 and he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy-seat on the east; and before the mercy-seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. 15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin-offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy-seat, and before the mercy-seat: 16 and he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleannesses of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins: and so shall he do for the tent of meeting, that dwelleth with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. 17 And there shall be no man in the tent of meeting when he goeth in to make atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel. 18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before Yahweh, and make atonement for it, and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. 19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleannesses of the children of Israel. 20 And when he hath made an end of atoning for the holy place, and the tent of meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat: 21 and Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a man that is in readiness into the wilderness: 22 and the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a solitary land: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness. 23 And Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there: 24 and he shall bathe his flesh in water in a holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt-offering and the burnt-offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 And the fat of the sin-offering shall he burn upon the altar. 26 And he that letteth go the goat for Azazel shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp. 27 And the bullock of the sin-offering, and the goat of the sin-offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung. 28 And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp. 29 And it shall be a statute for ever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourneth among you: 30 for on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before Yahweh. 31 It is a sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute for ever. 32 And the priest, who shall be anointed and who shall be consecrated to be priest in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments: 33 and he shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary; and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make atonement for the children of Israel because of all their sins once in the year. And he did as Yahweh commanded Moses.

Leviticus 23:23-32

23:23 And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying, 24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest unto you, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. 25 Ye shall do no servile work; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh. 26 And Yahweh spake unto Moses, saying, 27 Howbeit on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement: it shall be a holy convocation unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yahweh. 28 And ye shall do no manner of work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you before Yahweh your Elohim. 29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day; he shall be cut off from his people. 30 And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any manner of work in that same day, that soul will I destroy from among his people. 31 Ye shall do no manner of work: it is a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of solemn rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye keep your sabbath.

Isaiah 57:14-58:14

57:14 And he will say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people. 15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. 16 For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls that I have made. 17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid my face and was wroth; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart. 18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. 19 I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near, saith Yahweh; and I will heal him. 20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. 21 There is no peace, saith my Elohim, to the wicked. 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and declare unto my people their transgression, and to the house of Jacob their sins. 2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their Elohim, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near unto Elohim. 3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find your own pleasure, and exact all your labors. 4 Behold, ye fast for strife and contention, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye fast not this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh? 6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? 7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? 8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy healing shall spring forth speedily; and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of Yahweh shall by thy rearward. 9 Then shalt thou call, and Yahweh will answer; thou shalt cry, and he will say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking wickedly; 10 and if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul: then shall thy light rise in darkness, and thine obscurity be as the noonday; 11 and Yahweh will guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in dry places, and make strong thy bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. 12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places; thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. 13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, and the holy of Yahweh honorable; and shalt honor it, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: 14 then shalt thou delight thyself in Yahweh; and I will make thee to ride upon the high places of the earth; and I will feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of Yahweh hath spoken it.

Micah 7:18-20

7:18 Who is a Elohim like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth over the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in lovingkindness. 19 He will again have compassion upon us; he will tread our iniquities under foot; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. 20 Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the lovingkindness to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.

Matthew 5:2-16

5:2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see Yahweh. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of Yahweh. 10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
