Sunday November 11, 2007 Shalom Brethren,
Blow the Shofar! The ninth new moon was
visible in Gulfport, Mississippi and Roseau, Dominica tonight. Tonight
marked the end of the eighth month with the sunset on the 30th day of the month.
The lunar cycle is calculated to be about 29 and a half days which means a lunar
month is either 29 or 30 days for visibility. The Sanhedrin records that
on the 29th day of the month select men were sent out to look for the new moon
at sunset. If the new moon was not visible at the end of the 29th day, the
new moon would be declared with the following sunset making the current month 30
days.
This process is verified by looking for the new
moon on the 29th day at sunset. Even if not seen that night, it can better
assist in determining if one looked in the right location of the sky when it is
actually seen. A brother from central New Mexico reported that he did not
see the new moon last night confirming that it was not visible on the 29th of
the eighth month. Looking even on a night that is calculated not to have
visibility allows one to confirm visibility. It is definitely a good
practice to look at the end of the 29th day just to be sure.
December 10th, the 29th day of the ninth month,
at sunset is the next expected visible new moon. Have a blessed month!

Jerusalem, Israel
On Sunday November 11, 2007 observers across
Israel looked for the new moon but it was not sighted due to heavy cloud
coverage. The moon had 2.65% illumination and 41 minutes lagtime and therefore
would have been visible from Israel had there been no clouds.
Happy New Moon!
Rosh Chodesh Sameach!
